The frequency of infill replenishment can vary depending on the usage of artificial grass. Generally, it’s recommended every eighteen months to ensure optimal performance. Synthetic grass infill is a vital component of a high-quality artificial turf installation.

When Will I Need to Replace the Infill?

Proper installation of the infill is essential to ensure it’s positioned correctly. The infill should be spread evenly across the artificial grass and then brushed or broomed into the turf fibers. A power broom is recommended to brush up turf fibers and let the infill work between the turf blades. Finally, water the entire area evenly with a hose to help the material settle.

Factors Influencing Infill Replacement:

Usage: High-traffic areas (pets, kids, sports) require more frequent infill replacement.

Weather: Heavy rain or wind can cause “washout,” where infill is moved or lost, requiring more frequent, sometimes annual, checks.

Type of Infill: Silica sand, rubber, or specialized infills all have different lifespans.

Maintenance: Regular grooming, such as using a power broom or brush, helps maintain the pile height and indicates when the infill level has dropped.

When to Check:

Annually: It is recommended to check the infill level at least once a year to ensure the turf is properly supported.

Signs of Trouble: If the grass looks flat, matted, or if you can see the turf backing through the fibers, it is time to add more infill.

Properly maintained infill keeps the turf blades upright, protects the backing from UV damage, and extends the overall life of the lawn.

Which Infill Works Best for Each Application?

Landscape Application:

For budget-conscious users, silica sand infill is suitable for general front- or backyard installations where pets and children are absent. With children and pets, a more specialized infill is recommended.

Pet Application:

All-natural infill Zeolite / Zeodorizer neutralizes and removes Odors and bacteria. It integrates with other components to control bacterial and mold growth and odors. When paired with one of our Microban antimicrobial artificial grasses, adding an antimicrobial layer to the infill will help control odors.

Putting Green Application:

Silica sand is recommended for most texturized putting green applications. This finer sand will better fill in between putting green blades than the coarser sand used in landscape applications.

Playground Application:

All-natural infill Zeolite / Zeodorizer is recommended for its integrated antimicrobial properties. The added level of protection can offer peace of mind as children tumble and roll across the lawn.

Athletic Application:

Indoor fitness areas using Multi-Sport Turf do not require infill. However, when Multi-Sport is used in outdoor fitness applications, All-Natural Infill Zeolite / Zeodorizer is recommended because artificial turf expands and contracts in the sun.
